BABY LOSS AWARENESS EVENT - TOOK PLACE ON SATURDAY, JUNE 23rd 2012
June is Sands awareness month and to mark this Derby Sands held an Awareness Event on June 23rd 2012 from 11am - 3pm in Derby
Market Place. The event aimed to increase the public's awareness of the incidence of baby death and some of the factors that may
help to prevent the loss of babies lives. It also aimed to provide support and information to members of the public who have been
affected by baby loss. Finally, the event aimed to raise funds for Derby Sands so that they can continue to provide memory boxes to
bereaved parents at the Royal Derby Hospital.
Members of Derby Sands ran various stalls and activities including a home made cake stall, refreshments, a tombola, a home made
card stall, a nearly new stall, face painting and children's tattoos and a children's lotto. A large information stand was manned by Sue
Ruckledge, Bereavement Midwife from the Royal Derby Hospital and Lou Evans, Chair of Derby Sands.
Balloons were released throughout the day in memory of special babies and at the end of the event there was one large balloon
The event was a huge success and raised a fantastic £1,108.80 for Derby Sands. Lou Evans said "the support from the public was
amazing and I can't believe how many people came forward to talk because they had been affected by the loss of their own or
someone else's baby. We encouraged people to write messages on little tags attached to helium balloons, it was so moving to watch
them release the balloon. I would like to say a huge thank you to all the members of Derby Sands, their friends, families and the
people of Derby who supported us."
