Event BABY LOSS AWARENESS DAY JUNE 22ND 2013 June is Sands awareness month and to mark this Derby Sands held their second annual baby Loss Awareness Event on June 22nd 2013 from 10am - 3pm in Derby Market Place. The event aimed to increase the public's awareness of the incidence of baby death and the work of Derby Sands. It also aimed to provide support and information to members of the public who have been affected by baby loss. Finally, the event aimed to raise funds for Derby Sands so that we can continue to provide emotional support and practical help to bereaved families all over the county and beyond. Two of our wonderful Derby Sands Grannies The dads prepare the balloons Members of Derby Sands ran various stalls and activities including a home made cake stall, refreshments, tombola, raffle, home made card and wooden crafts stall, nearly new stall, face painting and children's tattoos and a children's lotto. A large information stand was manned by Sue Ruckledge, Bereavement Midwife from the Royal Derby Hospital. At 2pm the crowd gathered in the centre of the Market Place and after a short speech by Lou Evans (Chair of Derby Sands) balloons were released in memory of all those babies who have died during pregnancy, during birth or after birth. Watching the balloons was incredibly emotional Filming by Big Buddha Films The event was made even more special as it was filmed by Debbie Howard and the crew from Big Buddha Films, who are making a documentary about Stillbirth. Footage from the event may even be included in the documentary. To find out more about their work please visit their website here. At the end of the event, the raffle draw took place. All winners have now been contacted and have claimed their prizes. The event was a huge success and raised a fantastic £2066.70 for Derby Sands. Lou Evans said "the support from the families and friends of Derby Sands members and the general public was amazing and I can't believe how many people came forward to talk because they had been affected by the loss of their own or someone else's baby. We encouraged people to write messages on little tags attached to helium balloons, it was so moving to watch the balloon release and there was a lot of tears. I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped with organising the event and who supported the event on the day." Lou Evans, June 27th 2013
